Documenting

works of Soviet monumental art

From the 1960s-1980s, dozens of monumental artworks, in five main formats, were installed on buildings in Almaty, the capital of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. We've photographed and mapped every work in the city for our groundbreaking digital catalogs.

Researching

who made them, how, and why

Talented mural artists, known as monumentalisty, came to Kazakhstan from all around the Soviet Union to work at Almaty's Oner Art Combine. We're tracking them down and giving credit to these masters after decades of anonymity.

Advocating

for their preservation and restoration

As public buildings have been privatized after the fall of the USSR, works of monumental art have been damaged and destroyed. We argue for their historic value and fight for them to be saved and even restored.
